Implanon & IUD insertion with a female GP

Long-acting contraception fitted in clinic by Dr Sweety Syed, after an unhurried consultation to make sure it's the right choice for you.

Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), the contraceptive implant and the intrauterine device (IUD), is among the most effective contraception available, and once it's in you don't need to think about it every day. Dr Sweety Syed inserts and removes Implanon and inserts both hormonal and copper IUDs at her Gold Coast clinics.

Every procedure starts with a conversation about your options

Implanon (contraceptive implant)

A small, flexible rod placed under the skin of the inner upper arm under local anaesthetic. It lasts up to three years and can be removed at any time if you change your mind. Insertion and removal each take a few minutes in the treatment room.

Hormonal and copper IUDs

An IUD is a small device placed in the uterus. Hormonal IUDs (such as Mirena or Kyleena) can last up to five or eight years depending on the type and use, and may make periods lighter. Mirena can also be used for heavy periods and as part of menopausal hormone therapy. Copper IUDs are hormone-free and can last five to ten years.

What to expect

  1. Consultation first. Dr Sweety talks through your health, your plans and every contraceptive option, including pros, cons and side effects, so you can decide. Some tests may be recommended before an IUD.
  2. Procedure appointment. A longer appointment is booked for the insertion. You'll be told how to prepare, including pain relief beforehand.
  3. Follow-up. A check-up after an IUD insertion, and advice on what's normal and when to call.
Insertion can be uncomfortable, and like any procedure there are possible side effects and risks. Dr Sweety will explain these and discuss pain relief options with you before you decide.
Dr Sweety consults at Medicross Brygon Medical Centre, Upper Coomera and Runaway Bay Medical & Dental, and sees patients from Coomera, Pimpama, Oxenford, Hope Island, Helensvale, Runaway Bay, Labrador and across the Gold Coast.

Common questions

How long does an Implanon insertion take?

The procedure itself takes a few minutes under local anaesthetic. Allow extra time for the consultation and paperwork.

Do I need a consultation before an IUD insertion?

Usually yes. A consultation first lets Dr Sweety check the IUD suits you, arrange any tests, and plan pain relief and the insertion appointment.

Can Implanon or an IUD be removed early?

Yes. Both can be removed at any time if you want to change methods or plan a pregnancy, and fertility usually returns quickly after removal.

Where can I get an IUD inserted on the northern Gold Coast?

Dr Sweety Syed inserts IUDs at Medicross Brygon Medical Centre in Upper Coomera. Call 07 5665 9299 and mention you'd like an IUD consultation.
