Iron infusions in a calm clinic setting

Assessment, in-clinic iron infusion and follow-up, when iron deficiency is confirmed and an infusion is the right option for you.

Iron deficiency is common, especially with heavy periods, pregnancy and after childbirth, and it can leave you tired, breathless or foggy. Most people start with iron tablets. When tablets haven't worked, can't be tolerated, or iron needs to be replaced more quickly, Dr Sweety Syed may recommend an iron infusion in clinic.

How it works

  1. Consultation and blood test. Dr Sweety checks your symptoms and history and arranges iron studies and a blood count to confirm iron deficiency. Finding and treating the cause matters as much as the iron.
  2. Deciding together. If an infusion is suitable, she'll explain the benefits, possible side effects and alternatives so you can make an informed choice.
  3. The infusion. Given through a small drip in the treatment room, with monitoring during and after. Allow about an hour in clinic.
  4. Follow-up. A repeat blood test after several weeks to check your levels, and a plan to keep them up.

Possible side effects

Most people have no problems, but side effects can include headache, nausea, muscle aches and temporary changes to blood phosphate. Rarely, iron can leak under the skin and cause long-lasting brown staining, or an allergic reaction can occur. Dr Sweety will discuss these with you beforehand.

An iron infusion is only recommended when iron deficiency is confirmed by a blood test. Ask the clinic about fees and the cost of the iron product when you book.
Dr Sweety consults at Medicross Brygon Medical Centre, Upper Coomera and Runaway Bay Medical & Dental, and sees patients from Coomera, Pimpama, Oxenford, Hope Island, Helensvale, Runaway Bay, Labrador and across the Gold Coast.
