IUD & contraceptive implant with a female GP

Long-acting contraception fitted in clinic by Dr Sweety Syed, after an unhurried consultation to make sure it's the right choice for you.

Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), the intrauterine device (IUD) and the contraceptive implant, is among the most effective contraception available, and once it's in you don't need to think about it every day. Dr Syed inserts hormonal and copper IUDs, and inserts and removes contraceptive implants, at her Gold Coast clinics.

Hormonal IUD

A hormonal IUD is a small, T-shaped device placed in the uterus that releases a low dose of a progestogen hormone. Depending on the type, it can provide contraception for up to five or eight years, and it can be removed at any time. Many people find their periods become lighter. Some hormonal IUDs are also used to manage heavy periods, or to protect the lining of the uterus as part of menopausal hormone therapy.

  • Lasts up to 5–8 years
  • Can be removed any time
  • Periods often lighter
  • Also used for heavy periods

Copper IUD

A hormone-free option. A copper IUD can provide contraception for five to ten years depending on the type, and can also be used as emergency contraception if inserted within five days of unprotected sex.

Contraceptive implant

A small, flexible rod placed under the skin of the inner upper arm under local anaesthetic. It lasts up to three years and can be removed at any time if you change your mind. Insertion and removal each take a few minutes in the treatment room.

What to expect

  1. Consultation first. Dr Syed talks through your health, your plans and every contraceptive option, including pros, cons and side effects, so you can decide. Some tests may be recommended before an IUD.
  2. Procedure appointment. A longer appointment is booked for the insertion. You'll be told how to prepare, including pain relief beforehand.
  3. Follow-up. A check-up after an IUD insertion, and advice on what's normal and when to call.
Insertion can be uncomfortable, and like any procedure there are possible side effects and risks. Dr Syed will explain these and discuss pain relief options with you before you decide.
Dr Syed consults at Medicross Brygon Medical Centre, Upper Coomera and Runaway Bay Medical & Dental, and sees patients from Coomera, Pimpama, Oxenford, Hope Island, Helensvale, Runaway Bay, Labrador and across the Gold Coast.
